Mike Kavanaugh - April 7, 2008, 11:47 pm
Hi everybody, Mike Kavanaugh here. I just came from a meeting last night with the pastor of the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Albion, MI, Dwayne Bagley, keyboard player Terry Vargo, and several other musicians.

FUMC Albion is located on the campus of Albion College. The address is 600 E. Michigan Ave. Albion, MI 49224. You can see it on the Mapquest map here.

We are starting up a new coffeehouse that will be offering live music on Saturday nights from 8 to 10 PM. Admission will be free. Coffee & tea will be free. Donations will be accepted and encouraged for the performing artists and to help buy supplies (more coffee, etc.). Performing musicians will get the typical nominal amount of $40 to $50 for performing, plus tips that will be asked for by the passing of the hat between sets during community announcements.

This will not be the typical coffeehouse or coffee shop that offers exotic and expensive hot & cold coffee drinks using fancy steamers or noisy blenders. This is going to be a not-for-financial-profit community coffeehouse. It will, by design, spawn other groups or activities that will profit the community in some way on other nights of the week. It may be an AA or NA group that uses the facilities one night, for example, or a book discussion group on another, etc. On some nights, it may simply be a nice, quiet place to hang out, read, study or use our wireless Internet access.

While its home is starting off in and under the blessing of the church, it is not a "Christian coffeehouse". For lack of a better description, it will be a community coffeehouse run and staffed by a bunch of folks, including me, who happen to be Christian and want to have a good influence on the community. There has been a commercial on TV lately talking about how our country is really a good place and that the worst things you can find in America can be fixed by that which is good here. That sentiment fits well here, I think.

We are starting off small: as I write this we are moving into two rooms that were just vacated by another group who moved elsewhere on campus. The main performing room looks like it will comfortably hold 25 to 30 people in the audience. Another adjacent room will have tables & seating for listening, reading, socializing, etc. That too should hold at least a couple dozen more people. If by chance we have larger crowds or name acts coming through to perform, we have access to a larger hall that will hold several hundred people as well as a very large concert hall 100 yards away on campus.

Thats the music end of things and thats where this e-mail comes in. We intend to start performances by the beginning of May. We dont know how often to have performances at the start because we dont know how many artists are out there willing to come and play. We will be deciding at our next meeting on Saturday evening, April 12th. Theres no name chosen yet but I have affectionately (and forgetfully) called it the Whatchamacallit, so, until we have an official name it is the Whatchamacallit Coffeehouse.

So, if you are interested in performing and could e-mail me back as soon as possible with dates you have available through August, we can start figuring out how to start this baby up.

Any comments, suggestions, prayers, etc., would also be greatly appreciated.

And if you could pass this on to other acoustic performing artists...

Thanks.

Mike Kavanaugh

I came across this page again while searching the web,so I thought I'd stop by and say "Hi". You have a great singing voice and I hope you'll get back to the White Crow again soon. Though your site's great, you should consider setting up a MySpace page it's easy and free. I was surprised at how many people have viewed mine since I set it up in December. Hope to see and hear you soon.
Jim

Dorothy,

Jackie and I really enjoyed the "open mic" last Friday night. What a great variety of songs beautifully performed. You have a wonderful voice and know your way around the guitar.

As I told you I would love to play the open mic in December. I would like to meet some of the other players in the Caledonia area.

All the best,
Fred

Jamie-Sue Seal - March 5, 2005, 11:37 am
Hey Dorothy,

I got an e-mail from Ira McDonald singing your praises from the open mic at The Ark last week. I run a songwriter's round in the Lansing area, and also try to promote new music in this town too. If you could send me a CD and press kit or bio, I would appreciate it. Perhaps you could be one of my guests in the upcoming months. Thanks! Best wishes--keep rockin'!
